Expirated Blood
The following experiment was completed by using human blood (mine) and coughing it onto a cardboard surface. Yes, I know this is nasty and believe me it tasted nasty as well. However, the learning process must continue. ;) This pattern could be mistaken as a high velocity or medium velocity event if one weren't to notice the tell-tale signs such as mucus strands, discoloration, air bubbles and the presence of amylase (an enzyme present in saliva). The investigator should look for blood around the victims nose and mouth areas as well as penetrating wounds to the lungs. It has been noted that patterns such as these have often been created by EMT personnel while performing CPR.

Notice the difference in color/shades of red indicating diluted blood as well as mucus strands.

Close-up of the preceding picture.

Another tell-tale sign of this type of pattern is the presence of small air bubbles.
